SENTINEL Data Exchange
As the name implies, SENTINEL Data Exchange is all about exchanging data, and is specifically designed to meet the growing needs of AIDC supply chain integration. SENTINEL Data Exchange precisely and easily manages advanced automated label printing needs and directs the movement of collected data through the enterprise, serving as a single AIDC solution for your enterprise environment.
SENTINEL Data Exchange has all the functionality of the SENTINEL Print Pack product, and also includes the following additional plug-ins:
• Web Service input plug-in collects data from web applications and can process the data using any
SENTINEL process plug-in
• Database process plug-in processes data received from an input plug-in and updates, inserts or
deletes records in one or multiple databases. The Database plug-in can also activate stored
procedures in a database
• Web Service Client process plug-in uses a sentinel to call web service functions along with
parameters from received data
How It Works
1. Data Input. Data can arrive via a TCP/IP port, as a data file saved to a watch directory, as a file
printed to a virtual printer, or via a Data Collection Server
2. Processing. Data is then processed based on predetermined rules (defined as a map) and
printed through the print engine
3. Reporting. (Optional) Reporting information can be e-mailed in realtime to an administrator
to indicate a problem or activities can be logged for historical purposes
4. Output. (Optional) Data can be outputted for archiving or as input to another watch

How is SENTINEL licensed?
SENTINEL is licensed per printer. Licenses are not concurrent. SENTINEL Data Exchange is licensed by printer and database module.
How difficult is it to install and configure SENTINEL?
SENTINEL is easy to install and configure. All configuration is managed through a graphical user interface.

What are web services and how does SENTINEL use them?
Web services provide the means for software systems like SENTINEL to connect to other software applications in order to build distributed, service-oriented systems. Web services can be installed on the same server as SENTINEL and can be run locally. Web services are provided by Microsoft and even Mono, the open source web services server. SENTINEL has a web services plug-in that is integrated directly into the mapper utility and SENTINEL controller.
Web services can be used to extend the functionality of SENTINEL. For example, you can use web services to preprocess input data streams. You could also use web services to enable communication between an AS/400 DB2 system and SENTINEL. These are just examples of what web services can make possible.
How many printers can SENTINEL support?
SENTINEL can support thousands of printers and can operate over wide area networks.
Can I preprocess data input before it reaches SENTINEL?
Input data can be preprocessed and managed using the web services capabilities of SENTINEL S/5
What is Data Exchange and how is it used?
SENTINEL Data Exchange takes input data and formats and exports the data to a different system. It can be used to connect disparate host systems such as JD Edwards and SAP. Data Exchange can also send output to printers and other SENTINEL input monitors.
